"The Dreamer of Dreams"

"We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;—
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems."
(Arthur O'Shaughnessy)

Words of magic and wonder that sound deeply inside of me everytime I read them...
Probably also because I grew up like this, listening to this words every Christmas eve, through the lips of Gene Wilder, in this scene from "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate factory".

A wonderful soundtrack for growing up, I believe pika21

So I had to pay my fee, I guess. To pay my debt for the help in building my dreams and imaginary and my will to believe in Dreams so strongly...And I did it with pure pleasure and delightpika06

Here's my second tribute to my childhood, introduced to you, step by step:

Step 1: inspiration
I watched the movie again and again, I listened to the soundtrack (and also added "Pure imagination" to this blog playlist pika06) and made a great research on the web, looking for the perfect pictures and hints.
I collected a great selection of reference images, but as you will clearly see, this picture above is the one that helped me the most.

Step 2: conception
Two or three extremely rough sketches with ballpoint pen on very poor paper, in order to set up the composition and distinctive character features.
The sketch above passed my final selection.

Step 3: realization
Et voila!
Here he is, the Dreamer of Dreams, framed like a prince (the frame is another great flea market find, re-painted for the occasion).
My debt is paid, for the moment...But more pieces are to come, because my debt is huge just as much as the fun and delight I have in creating these little tributes to my childhood memories!

And so now everything is ready, all packed up and shipped towards LA, for this great art show at Gallery 1988:

Crazy4Cult
Opening reception: Friday, July 9th, 7-10 PM

  2. Hallo dear, as I said for the other piece about "Edward Scissorhands", I used a mixed technique on watercolour paper: mostly acrylics with watercolours and some gouache details, with tiny collage elements :)

..Usually I do not take pictures of my WIPs...I'm a bit shy about that...But maybe in the future I'll manage myself to post a much more detailed step-by-step creation ;)

  5. My wife and I went to the 1988 gallery for the first time specifically because we knew your pieces were in it! And I have to say you did not disappoint!

I love the edward scissorhands piece! Great stylized characters. And the Wonka one is just as impressive. They are great to see online, but terribly impressive in person. Great color, composition, characters and perfect framing.

I just wish your next show wasn't in Rome...as we won't be able to make it.
